FUN FACTS: Grease- Sandy's Leather Jacket
What happened to Sandy’s leather outfit from Greese?! Well Olivia Newton-John has it, of course! But that wasn’t always like that until one amazing fan stepped in to help.
The buyer of Olivia Newton-John's leather jacket from the 1978 film Grease has returned it to the singer and donated his $243,000 winning bid to her cancer treatment centre in Australia.
In a recording provided by Julien's Auctions, the mystery bidder offered some kind words to the 71-year-old as he handed back the jacket during a secret meeting in California.
'It should not sit in a billionaire's closet for country club bragging rights. The odds of beating a recurring cancer using the newest emerging therapies is 1,000-fold greater than someone appearing out of the blue, buying your most famous and cherished icon, and returning it to you,' he said.
The jacket and the figure-hugging black pants worn by Olivia for her 'You're the One That I Want' duet with John Travolta in Grease were sold to separate buyers at a Beverly Hills auction last month, fetching more than double the expected price. They were among 500 items from her collection being sold to benefit the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, which the singer co-founded after her first bout of breast cancer in 1992.
The British-born, Australian-raised performer revealed earlier this year that she was battling breast cancer for a third time. The buyer of the jacket described himself as Olivia's 'No. 1 fan' and wished her 'God speed for a quick recovery.' Olivia said she plans to put the jacket on display at her Melbourne cancer centre. 'That is the most incredibly generous thing to do for me,' she told the anonymous bidder. 'I am so grateful, and I am just blown away.'
