PROPS: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) Rankin/Bass Puppets

Just when you thought these were long gone…

The original Santa and Rudolph puppets from Rankin/Bass' 1964 classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer are alive and well. These puppets are so special and are so important to all of us. They were put on eBay for 10 million dollars with an option of “make an offer”.

The man who is selling them said he got them from his aunt (who worked at Rankin/Bass in the 1970s). She bought these two puppets from the company, as well as other ones from the Rudolph production, including Yukon Cornelius and Hermey, the elf who wants to grow up to be a dentist. (She also had bought the other characters, such as Sam the Snowman, played by Burl Ives, but they "got melted in our attic," she explained.)

These are original production puppets. When you see them, you can tell they are hand made, they have mechanisms to make them movie, they weren’t toys. Rankin/Bass did give out other puppet characters used in animated programs to their office staff.

These things capture the magic of Christmas for millions of people around the world for decades to come, they belong in a museum.
